This is the educational division of the Shark Education & Research Center in the Bahamas. Its main purpose is to bring humans closer to sharks, focusing on how to interact with them and to emphasize their crucial position and importance in the marine realm. The two main pillars of Shark School are ongoing scientific research on Shark behavior and Shark accidents.
We are fortunate to have joined with one of Dr. Ritter’s esteemed Shark School Colleagues, Chad Sinden, Chief Shark School instructor, to bring Shark Fest back to Beqa. We will continue Dr. Ritter’s work with Beqa’s sharks and carry on his passion and dedication to shark education. Please note, our Cathedral Shark Dive generally operates on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week. However, this schedule is subject to change based on weather and other conditions. One shark dive day may be included with a 5 or more night package. Additional shark dives will be based on availability and conditions at the resort.

Each year we dedicate a week at Beqa to diving with sharks plus shark education. We were privileged and honored to have one of the most iconic figures in the shark world, Dr. Erich Ritter, to supervise our shark conversation, education and Shark Fest at Beqa Lagoon Resort. Sadly, Dr. Ritter passed away in August 2020.
The world-renowned shark behaviorist hadalso established Shark School more than 15 years ago in Miami, Florida. This is the educational division of the Shark Education & Research Center in the Bahamas. Its main purpose is to bring humans closer to sharks, focusing on how to interact with them and to emphasize their crucial position and importance in the marine realm. The two main pillars of Shark School are ongoing scientific research on Shark behavior and Shark accidents.
We are fortunate to have joined with one of Dr. Ritter’s esteemed Shark School Colleagues, Chad Sinden, Chief Shark School instructor, to bring Shark Fest back to Beqa. We will continue Dr. Ritter’s work with Beqa’s sharks and carry on his passion and dedication to shark education. We are pleased to announce that Chad will be conducting our upcoming Shark Fest in July/Aug 2024. Surrounded by over 190 miles of spectacular coral, Beqa Lagoon has one of the world’s largest barrier reefs. Diving these calm protected waters is like exploring another world. The water is clear and warm, visibility is typically over 80 ft, currents are generally mild and the water temperature stays a fairly constant 80 degrees. Fiji is known as the Soft Coral Capital of the World and offers spectacular undersea gardens in all hues. Many of the most spectacular dive sights are only a few minutes from shore and if you stayed long enough, you could explore over 100 unique sights.
BEQA’S TOP TEN DIVE SITES
SHARK DIVE ~The best shark dive experience int the world! At least nine different species of sharks – Tigers, Bulls, Silver, Nurse and other sharks. World-famous and the experience of a lifetime.
FANTASEA ~ Colors, soft coral, and lots of Georgian Fans in different shapes, sizes, and colors.
CARPET COVE ~ Lots of carpet anemones with clownfish. Also an 80 ft Chinese Trawler wreck at 100ft.
JOHN’S TUNNEL ~ A tunnel 30 ft long, 5 ft-8 ft wide lined with soft coral. Also a wreck at 80 ft.
JOE’S BEST ~ One coral head 40ft by 90ft with a giant swim through in the middle teeming with soft corals, fans, school of barracudas, etc.
SOFT CORAL PLATEAU ~ A reef sitting right in the middle of the north passage to Beqa Lagoon. Eagle rays, blue-ribbon eels, and tons of soft coral.
SHINING GLORY ~ Three coral heads – one of which has a crack at the very top offering spectacular light refractions.
SEVEN SISTERS ~ Seven coral heads lined up in a row, each with its own unique features.
BLUE WALL ~ The wall on the southeast side of Beqa Lagoon rises from 150 ft to 15 ft. Sharks, mantas, eagle rays abound and always at least 80 ft or more visibility.
FRIGATE WALL ~ Very similar to Blue Wall – Lots of cracks and alleyways in the wall. Also home of the “Fiji Pipeline” famous surf spot!
